One of the most difficult things about studying for a PhD is that it can be expensive — and scholarships are few and far between. The government doesn’t provide the same kind of generosity for post-graduate degrees as it does for undergraduate degrees, and that can be rather discouraging. However, there are PhD scholarships out there. Here are 50 PhD scholarships worth applying for:

Math and Hard Sciences

If you are interested in math-related subjects, or in some of the hard sciences, you can find some decent PhD scholarships.

  1. SMART: The U.S. Department of Defense offers the Science, Mathematics, & Research for Transformation scholarship every year. While open to undergraduate students and masters students as well, the SMART scholarship can be a great source of funding for PhD students.
  2. Luis Meyer-Schutzmeister: This is meant for women who show ability as outstanding graduate students in physics. A great opportunity for women interested in science.
  3. AISES Intel Scholarship: If you are interested in the STEM fields, you are eligible to apply for this scholarship for Alaska Natives and American Indians.
  4. National Science Foundation: Offers stipends for graduate students hoping to do well in science fields.
  5. NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program: Graduate students, including PhD students, can receive help for those interested in aeronautics.
  6. International Fulbright Science & Technology PhD Scholarship: Meant for citizens of Australia that want to get a doctoral degree in the U.S.
  7. ORISE Educational and Research Experiences: PhD students can look for scholarships and fellowships at this network of science and technology schools.
  8. Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Award: Fellowship meant for those interested in science research from the National Institutes of Health.
  9. Science and Technology Policy Fellowships: PhD students studying science fields can apply for these awards.

Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences

Look for PhD scholarships offered for those who do research in specific subjects. A great way to fund your education.

  1. The Steve S. Kant Young Artists & Scholars Fund: Scholarships and fellowships are awarded to those with an artistic bent. Can be used by PhD students, in addition to undergrad and masters students. Preference given to Korean American students.
  2. Fulbright Program: A great way to study abroad for your graduate degree, including a PhD. Aimed at students interested in assisting English teaching.
